The Premier League 2026/27 season is set to kick off, and there’s a lot to catch up on.
When Does the Premier League Start?
The Premier League 2026/27 season kicks off on Friday, August 21, as champions Arsenal welcome Coventry City to the Emirates Stadium in what should be quite the atmosphere.
The Gunners ended a 22-season wait for the title this past May, with head coach Mikel Arteta delivering the club its first Premier League championship since 2004.
Eagle-eyed soccer fans will know that this season kicks off about a week later than usual, with the Premier League pushing its start date back to give players extra recovery time following this summer’s World Cup.
Last Season Recap: Arsenal’s Reign Begins
Arsenal won the Premier League by seven points last season, ahead of Manchester City in second and Manchester United in third.
The Gunners wasted no time reminding everyone why they’re the team to beat. On August 16, at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, Arsenal faced the FA Cup-winning City in the Community Shield and delivered a statement with a 3-0 win.
Riccardo Calafiori scored inside 25 seconds in the traditional season-opener, and it landed as an early signal that their title defence starts from a position of strength.
About the Premier League Promoted Teams 2026/27
Three clubs made the jump up from the Championship, English football’s second tier, this summer.
Coventry City, Ipswich Town, and Hull City replaced Burnley, Wolves, and West Ham. Coventry won the Championship outright under Frank Lampard, ending a 25-year absence from the top division in doing so, one of the longest gaps of any club in modern Premier League history.
Ipswich secured the second automatic promotion place as runners-up, and are back for another crack at the big time after an immediate relegation last time they came up in 2024.
Hull completed the trio by beating Middlesbrough in the play-off final at Wembley, the club’s first Premier League action since 2016/17.
All three have spent money to try to stick around this time. Coventry, in particular, has backed Lampard with a club-record spend, while Ipswich and Hull have each brought in a dozen or so new faces to bridge the gap in quality.
Still, staying up as a promoted side is a different test entirely from getting there, and history says the odds are stacked against all three doing it together.
Premier League Transfers 2026/27 to Watch Out For
The summer produced some of the biggest deals in Premier League history.
Manchester City made Elliot Anderson the most expensive British player ever, signing the midfielder from Nottingham Forest for $155 million. Chelsea then set a new record by paying $156.5M to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa later in the summer.
Arsenal added Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for a fixed $101M, handing Arteta a midfield built around control as part of a clear win-now push.
Manchester United rebuilt its midfield, too, by bringing in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for a relatively modest $46.8M and Andrey Santos from Chelsea as Michael Carrick looks to build on a third-place finish and compete in the Champions League.
Chelsea, meanwhile, moved early and often under new head coach Xabi Alonso. As well as Rogers, Alonso purchased Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for $70M and recruited experienced duo Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck from Brentford and Brighton, respectively.
Premier League 2026/27 Opening Weekend
All roads lead to the Emirates Stadium on Friday, August 21, where Arsenal face Coventry in a matchup that pairs two champions against one another.
It’s the first true test of the new season for Arsenal after their Community Shield statement, and an immediate look at whether Coventry’s spending translates to Premier League points on the biggest stage.
