Sports Betting in Canada
Sports betting gets you roaring for sports action with a variety of bets for every fan. From simple wagers like moneyline, where you back a winner, to more complex bets like parlays that combine multiple outcomes for a bigger payout, there's a world of excitement waiting.
Moneyline
A moneyline bet is a payout listed for one outcome - to simply win a match - rather than beat a spread or handicap. This can be expressed by decimal odds, fractional odds, or American odds.
Point Spread
The spread is the expected differential between two teams in a match. If teams are perceived to be equal in a match, the point spread would be listed as EV, as in “even” or 0, with no handicap set to either side.
When one team is perceived to be stronger than the other, the point spread acts as a handicap, much like how handicaps are used in golf to level the playing field between players with different skills. Let’s use a football example: if one team is thought by oddsmakers to be a touchdown better than the other, the line would be set with the favourite at -7.
Over/Under
The over/under bet (also called a totals bet) is a wager on whether the total number in a specific instance - like the combined score of a game or the total wins a team will have in a season - will be over or under a set median. Examples would be 33.5 for the total commutative points in a football game, or 6.5 for wins in a season of football for a given team.
Prop Bets
A prop bet, short for proposition bet, is a wager on something other than the outcome of a game. Instead, it focuses on a potential event within it such as the number of shots on goal in a hockey game, the number of completions in a football game, or strikeouts thrown by a pitcher in a baseball game.
Parlays
A parlay combines two or more outcomes from different events into a single wager, where the odds of each event are multiplied together. The result is a higher-risk, higher-reward bet, as all selected outcomes must be correct to win.
Understanding Odds
All three ways of expressing odds - decimal, fractional, and American - represent the same thing, but the preferred notation depends on the region you’re betting within.
Bettors Tip: At LeoVegas, you can tailor your odds format to your liking. Simply choose ‘Sports Setting’ from the main menu and select to view odds in decimal, fractional, or American. Canadian bettors for the most part lean towards decimal.
Decimal odds are the preferred choice of many Canadians, like most bettors in Commonwealth countries and the UK. This type of odds is a straightforward multiplier: if you bet $100 at odds of 2.30, your payout would be $230, which includes a $130 profit on your $100 bet.
Fractional odds are popular in the UK for horse racing but can also be used for sports events or table games. Taking our $100 bet example, a return of $130 would be expressed fractionally as 13/10. You win $13 for every $10 wagered or $130 for your $100 bet.
American odds are similar to fractional but expressed as positive or negative in relation to a 100 base. +130 would be a win of $130 to your $100 bet. -130, conversely, would mean you have to bet 130 to win 100. For perspective, 130 would be represented in decimal form as 1.77, and 10/13 in fractional odds.
Popular Sports for Betting in Canada
Hockey
Canadians like the puck life, having grown up playing themselves, with a rink rat friend, or simply watching Monday night hockey with the fam. Yes, hockey is strong in Canada and is Canada’s national official winter sport. So it’s no surprise that betting on hockey, especially with iconic teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens.
NHL Betting: With the NHL being a major draw, betting on hockey’s biggest league is a favourite among sports fans here. From regular-season games to intense playoffs, there's always plenty of action to wager on.
Junior and Amateur Leagues: Canadian junior and amateur hockey leagues, like the CHL and university leagues, offer exciting betting opportunities. These games showcase emerging talent and competitive play, making them a popular choice for bettors looking for more local action.
Football
Football still means football - the one played with a good old-fashioned pig skin. But, there’s room in this big nation for both the NFL and the CFL betting.
NFL: Betting on the NFL, despite the league having no Canadian teams, is still significant, with regular-season showdowns and playoffs, thanks to proximity to the US, the action, and extensive media coverage of all things NFL.
CFL: With unique rules, local city, and inter-province rivalries, like the Argos and the TiCats, CFL betting offers fans a chance to get some skin in the game as they follow their home teams to the Grey Cup.
Basketball
Even with one Canadian team in the NBA, the ‘We the North’ fanbase is strong and true, especially since the Raptors clinched the Championships in 2019.
NBA Betting - Betting on star-studded NBA games is popular, with many Canadians following the league closely, despite only having one Canadian team - the Toronto Raptors - placing bets on everything from regular-season games to the NBA Championship.
College Basketball - Especially during major tournaments like March Madness, college basketball is BIG. Betting on college games offers fans the chance to bank on emerging talent and close matchups easily caught on TV.
Baseball
MLB Betting - The Toronto Blue Jays, Canada's sole MLB team, have a dedicated fan base coast-to-coast and a rich history, including back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. There are thousands of pre-game and in-play markets on any game across the league - including games involving Canada’s lone MLB team.
Soccer
Major Leagues and International Tournaments: Soccer is rapidly gaining traction in Canada, driven by major leagues like the English Premier League, MLS, and international tournaments. Fun fact, Vancouver was recently abuzz when Ryan Reynolds brought his Wrexman AFC to BC Place in July 2024 - the same spot Lionel Messi pulled a no-show for back in May 2024. And with Canada set to co-host the World Cup in 2026 with matches in Toronto and Vancouver, soccer fever is only going to heat up! There hasn’t been a better time to take to the pitch and get amongst the action.
Other Popular Sports
Rugby, golf, and tennis are popular bets if you’re between seasons or looking for a new lead. Curling fans can offer their expertise by banking on a team in The Brier, or perhaps it’s Canada’s other national sport - lacrosse - that’s worthy of a wager. From darts to yachting, there’s a bet for you at LeoVegas Canada beyond the puck drop, pitch, and kick-off.
Most Popular Canadian Sports Teams
Toronto Raptors (NBA)
Back in 1995, the NBA’s northern expansion brought two teams to Canada - the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors. It was short-lived however, as the West Coast saw their beloved Grizzlies sold and relocated to Memphis in 2001, making the Toronto Raptors Canada’s only basketball NBA team. Owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the Raptors play their home games at Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto - or The Six. During their historic 2019 Championship run, the 'We The North' chant became a national phenomenon, uniting Canadians from coast to coast. This rallying cry celebrated the Raptors' (and Canada’s) first NBA Championship but also became a symbol of national pride, bringing basketball back to the limelight and inspiring young Canadian players and fans. And hopefully, inspiring the NBA to give Vancouver another chance at team ownership.
Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL)
The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the most storied franchises in the NHL, known for their rich history and passionate fan base. Going back to 1917, they are one of the oldest hockey teams in Canada and have hoisted 13 Stanley Cups, making them one of the most successful teams in NHL history. These days, the ‘Leafs’ iconic logo is one of the most recognizable symbols in sports, and its classic design has become a staple of Canadian hockey culture.
Montreal Canadiens (NHL)
Founded in 1909, the Montreal Canadiens are officially the oldest professional hockey team - full stop. The Canadiens boast 24 Stanley Cups, the most in NHL history. Fierce rivalries with the Leafs and Boston Bruins further underscore their prominent role in hockey history - not to mention these match-ups are some of the most popular for Canadian bettors.
Edmonton Oilers (NHL)
The Edmonton Oilers go back to 1972 and rose to epic heights during the 80s, an era led by #99 Wayne Gretzky, and a roster of hockey legends including Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, and Grant Fuhr. ‘The Great One’ played for the Oilers from 1979 to 1988, and secured five Stanley Cups in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990 for the ‘Festival City’. In the 2023-2024 season, the Oilers made a strong run but, despite a dramatic comeback to Game 7, they fell short in the final moments against the Panthers. As the only Canadian team to come close to capturing the Cup since 1990, the glory of their run was enjoyed from Vancouver to Halifax.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers (CFL)
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are a cornerstone of the CFL, dating back to 1930. The Blue Bombers have claimed 12 Grey Cups, showcasing their long-standing success in the CFL, and boast one of the most passionate fan bases in the league. These super fans create an electric atmosphere at every game - especially when they face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on their home turf of IG Stadium.

Betting lines are the odds set that determine both the favourite and underdog for a match. These are set by the oddsmaker, but they may shift throughout the week, if a team is becoming heavily favoured.
The +/- signs in sports betting can have multiple meanings. If a +/- symbol is used to display the odds of a market, then you’re viewing your bets with American odds. The - indicates that this result is favoured. The + symbol implies that this outcome is less likely.
+/- can also indicate the spread in most sports. In this instance, the - also indicates the more likely winner. If a team is shown as -6.5 on the spread, they’d have to win the game by at least seven points to cover it. As for the + sign, this usually represents the underdog, and if a team is +6.5, they’d have to win the game or lose by less than seven to cover the spread.
Betting markets are types of bets that a player can make before or during a game. LeoVegas offers numerous betting markets to choose from, such as over/under markets, the money line market, or the point spread market.
Sports betting odds represent the likelihood of an outcome happening. So, when odds are calculated, it is an analysis of what the most probable outcome is for that upcoming scenario. For parlays, the odds of the bets you have chosen are multiplied together - creating the possibility of a bigger payout.
