Moneyline

A moneyline bet is a payout listed for one outcome - to simply win a match - rather than beat a spread or handicap. This can be expressed by decimal odds, fractional odds, or American odds.

Point Spread

The spread is the expected differential between two teams in a match. If teams are perceived to be equal in a match, the point spread would be listed as EV, as in “even” or 0, with no handicap set to either side.

When one team is perceived to be stronger than the other, the point spread acts as a handicap, much like how handicaps are used in golf to level the playing field between players with different skills. Let’s use a football example: if one team is thought by oddsmakers to be a touchdown better than the other, the line would be set with the favourite at -7.

Over/Under

The over/under bet (also called a totals bet) is a wager on whether the total number in a specific instance - like the combined score of a game or the total wins a team will have in a season - will be over or under a set median. Examples would be 33.5 for the total commutative points in a football game, or 6.5 for wins in a season of football for a given team.

Prop Bets

A prop bet, short for proposition bet, is a wager on something other than the outcome of a game. Understanding Odds

All three ways of expressing odds - decimal, fractional, and American - represent the same thing, but the preferred notation depends on the region you’re betting within.

For perspective, 130 would be represented in decimal form as 1.77, and 10/13 in fractional odds.
