Online Poker Rules

No more smokey back poker rooms of the past! It’s full speed ahead to our mobile friendly, online casino world of choices for roaring poker fans of all bankrolls and experience. Pick up poker using nothing more than virtual coins for play and hit the tables for speedy new-takes on online poker room classics like Caribbean Stud or Joker Poker.

Casino poker has taken the joy of online poker rooms and morphed it onto table games, for fast plays that no longer require you to call up a pool of your pals to make a game happen. All you need is to take a seat in a player versus dealer poker table game. And that’s really the key here - it’s player versus dealer, so your poker hand really only has to beat one other.

Almost all poker games start with an ante. Found in most table games, an ante is a stake or wager put in by all players to signify they’re in the game. It’s gotta be on the table before any cards are dealt. Once the antes are sorted, it’s game on!

From here on in, there are going to be variations on how the game flows. Caribbean Stud? It’s a quick short and speedy play with an ante and one betting round. For online poker Texas Hold’em games, up to five betting rounds will play out with options to call, bet, raise or fold on each turn. What does this lingo mean? Let’s get into it below:

  • Bet - if you’re putting money or chips on the table, you’re making a bet.

  • Call - matching bets on the table.

  • Raise - take it up a notch by increasing existing bets at the table.

  • Fold - bow out and cut your losses!

Poker is all about those choices, at every stage of the game. Three card, five card, seven card, you name it, you can play it online. At the end of all rounds, it all comes down to the best poker hand. Casino poker games are a fabulous way to get a grip on the game, its betting flow and jump in anytime, 24/7.

  • Straight Flush: Any 5 cards in sequence of the same suit.

  • Four of a Kind: The same card in each of the 4 suits.

  • Full House: 3 cards of one rank and 2 cards of another rank.

  • Flush: All 5 cards in the same suit, that are not in sequence.

  • Straight: Any 5 numbered cards in sequence in at least two different suits.

  • Three of a Kind: 3 cards of the same rank and 2 non-paired cards.

  • Two Pair: Two cards of the same rank and two cards of another rank.

  • Pair: Two cards of the same rank and three unrelated cards.

  • High Card: When you achieve none of the hands above, the highest card counts.

Online Poker Games Types

Texas Hold’em

If you’ve tuned into the WSOP or WPT on TV, you’ve seen this game play out! Texas Hold’em is a five card poker game using a set of community cards. The goal is to create your best poker hand using a combo, any combo, of two hole cards and five community cards. Easy to pick up and extremely fun to play it’s no wonder it holds rank as the world’s most popular poker game!

Caribbean Stud

A casino table game with ancestry tracing back to five card stud poker. As a table game, it’s player versus dealer with an ante necessary to kick things off. After five cards are dealt, face down, one more betting round will determine who’s still in the game. If you’re in, double up that ante before all cards are flipped over. A little good news - the dealer’s hand only qualifies if it's AK or better. Now, if the dealer’s hand qualifies and you can beat it, it's even money on the ante but the raise pays as follows:

  • Royal Flush 100:1

  • Straight Flush 50:1

  • Four of a King 20:1

  • Full House 7:1

Omaha Hi-Low

First, let’s unpack the basics of Omaha. Much like Texas Hold’em, there’s a shared bank of community cards available to help create poker hands. But in Omaha, you’re restricted to using only two out of your four hole cards along with three community cards. That’s the only acceptable combo, and it holds up for Hi Lo as well. But here’s the kicker. In Omaha Hi Lo, the goal is to create both the highest ranking poker hand at the table and the lowest.

3 Card Poker

All you need is a player and a dealer to make this magic happen. It all starts with an ante before three face down cards are dealt. To stay in the game, you’ll need to double up the ante. To win, you’ve got to beat the dealer’s hand, which needs to be at least queen-high. Otherwise, wagers are returned, nothing gained but nothing lost. Beating the dealer is rewarded with a 1:1 payday, but if it’s with a pair or higher, the paydays get even better.

  • Straight Flush 40:1

  • Three of a Kind 30:1

  • Straight 6:1

  • Flush 3:1

  • Pair 1:1

5 Card Poker

One of poker’s most popular plays - five card poker offers both stud and draw variations to choose from. For the sake of popularity, let’s focus on draw. All seated players are dealt five cards, followed by a round of betting and a round of drawing. This is the point whereby you can toss (discard) and refresh up to 3 cards in an effort to improve your hand. Another round of betting, and it all comes to an end with the best five card poker hand taking the pot.

7 Card Poker

Fun fact - before online poker supremely boosted the popularity of Texas Hold’em, this was the go-to game, often called Seven Card Stud. Here’s the deal - literally - players get seven cards to make a five card poker hand. The first two cards are dealt face down (hole cards) and the third (door card) face up, with a betting round inbetween. Then it flows as follows: a face up card is dealt, followed by a betting round. This repeats 3x. Once the River hits the board, it’s go time - one final betting round before it all comes to who’s left and who holds the best poker hand.

Pai Gow

This one is a thinker. It requires you to have your head in the game a little more than say, blackjack. Here’s why. Players are dealt seven cards to create two hands with - a two card hand (known as the Second highest hand, or Low Hand) and a five card one (referred to as the High or Back Hand). The goal is to have both hands beat the dealer’s. Note, when creating your two hands, your High Hand (five carder) must rank higher than your Low Hand (two carder).

Video Poker

Five card draw is the name of the game for most video poker games. The fun begins with five cards across the screen. A simple tap will save the cards to keep and discard others, for a redeal and refresh. The goal isn’t to beat a dealer in this case, it’s simply to create a winning ranking poker hand. Payouts, as with any slot video game, are determined by the wager and the particular choice of game.

Take a virtual seat, learn the betting rounds with handy prompts, and even see the winning percentage shot your hand has. Can I play online poker on mobile?

Yes, and in landscape or portrait, whatever your fingers are most comfortable with! Mobile casino games are plentiful, and offer the perfect entertainment on-the-go solution for poker and card & casino table games like blackjack, baccarat, and roulette.

How do you play video poker in a casino?

A delightful choice, if we do say so ourselves. Based on a five card poker game, video poker is easy and enjoyable. On the screen you’ll see five cards dealt to you, all face up obviously and in full view. Discard the ones you dislike, and keep the ones you want part of your hand - redeal, repeat. That’s your game in a nutshell! What do we like about it?

You can create your own pace, in your own space. Plus, with the possibilities of video and animation, most video poker machines offer amazing variations to spice up your play, such as Joker Poker, Pairs or Better or Aces & Faces.

How many decks of cards are used for online poker?

To answer this, you should first know that it’s the same regardless if you’re online or offline. Anytime you’re playing poker, it’s a one deck game. If an additional deck was thrown into the mix, the entire game wouldn’t quite play the same would it?
