Irish 2000 Guineas Betting Tips

The opening classic of the Irish flat racing season, the 2000 Guineas, is the highlight of the day this Saturday (May 27th) at the Curragh. The best and most promising three-year-old milers in the country will take to the racecourse looking to land a significant chunk of the impressive €500,000 prize pot.

This Group 1 race is run over a mile and was last year won by the imperious Native Trail who justified his short price to complete a gritty victory ahead of New Energy and the British raider Imperial Fighter. Irish 2000 Guineas Tips Overview

Check out some highlights for the upcoming 2023 race below!

Royal Scotsman

Following on from a brilliant performance at Newmarket, connections of Royal Scotsman clearly feel he is ready for a serious run at this race having stumped up a heavy fee to get his name added to the entries at a late date. This will be the first time Jamie Spencer has saddled the horse and with this experienced campaigner on board he is sure to be popular in the betting market. The Paul Cole trained runner finished just behind Guineas winner Chaldean as a two-year old in the Dewhurst last season and his first showing as a three-year old showed just as much promise if not more.

Hi Royal

Hi Royal will be looking to go one better than the second-place finish in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket last month. In that race the Kevin Ryan trained runner started at an SP of 125/1, but after that impressive showing he is now vying for favouritism in this race. This was just the eighth time a horse had finished in the top four of the opening classic of the season at odds of 100/1 or greater in the last 20+ years. Question marks will be asked as to why he ran to a level so much higher than the form he’d previously shown and this race will go a long way to showing if this was just a one off.

Paddington

Legendary trainer Aidan O'Brien has won this race an incredible 11 times down the years and his leading challenger this year is the progressive Paddington. He is the only horse in the race that won last time out and has a perfect record of two victories from his two runs at this track. Form suggests he should stay the distance and it is a horse that has been lightly run and brimming with potential. One thing going against Paddington is the ground, with all his wins coming on heavier ground than is forecast this weekend.

Proud And Regal

Proud and Regal is the only one of the 12 runners to have tasted Group 1 success after his impressive success at the Criterium at Saint-Cloud in his final showing as a two-year old juvenile. He also won at the Curragh as well as a near miss at the Group 1 National Stakes here so obviously likes this course. He is yet to be tested against some of the British runners who will take to the start here and he was disappointingly third in his first outing as a three-year-old, despite being sent off as the 6/4 favourite.

Galeron

Galeron's finest hour came at this venue last year when he landed the lucrative Goffs Million race over the same mile distance. Much like Hi Royal he upset the odds to claim a fourth-place finish at the English 2,000 Guineas at incredible odds of 150-1, which proves his talent should not be underestimated. Trainer Charlie Hills triumphed in this race back in 2019 and will be looking for another big showing here. Going against him is the fact he has finished behind favourite Royal Scotsman on all three previous occasions they have met and he finished a good three to four lengths behind Hi Royal at Newmarket.

Betting Suggestion:

All the signs point to Royal Scotsman being the horse to beat here. His connections are full of confidence and his last few starts point to a horse that is full of ability and loves the big stage. With the talented Jamie Spencer on the reigns, he could take all the beating.
