York’s Ebor Festival continues on Friday with a fantastic seven-race card, headlined by the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at 15:35. With Group races and valuable handicaps also taking place, there is plenty to take in on the Knavesmire with some potential stars of the future in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes (15:00) and the Lonsdale Cup (14:25).
Andrew Balding’s MOUNT ATLAS remains relatively lightly raced, especially in handicap company, and he was far from disgraced when fifth in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester in May.
It was another good effort when keeping on in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot and he returned to winning ways at the same track last time out. The handicapper has responded with a 5lb rise but there could still be more to come.
Selection: Mount Atlas @ SP
Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one and that appears to be the case here, as TRAWLERMAN should prove very hard to beat. He was probably unlucky to bump into generational talent Kyprios last season and finished second twice behind that rival.
With Kyprios now retired, Trawlerman announced himself as the top dog of the division with a dominant seven-length win in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. His five rivals here will struggle to contend with that level of form.
Selection: Trawlerman @ SP
Karl Burke certainly knows what he’s doing when it comes to training two-year-olds and RECIPROCATED appears to be a very smart one. You can put a line through his run over 7f at Ascot as he was far too keen in the early stages and failed to stay the trip as a result.
Coming back to 6f at York, we should see a much better performance. Impressive when scoring at Carlisle under a penalty on his penultimate start, this looks like a good opportunity.
Selection: Reciprocated @ SP
The 5f sprinting division isn’t the strongest at the moment and this race presents a unique opportunity for juvenile LADY IMAN to race against her elders. This very talented daughter of Starman has produced an excellent level of form already and possesses both the speed and ability to make the frame here. One of only two juveniles in the field, she gets a substantial weight allowance and could be the one to side with on that evidence.
Selection: Lady Iman @ SP
It took CAPE FLORA a few goes to get the hang of things, but the penny finally dropped at Leicester last time out. She was far too good for her rivals that day and managed to put six lengths between her and the second as they crossed the line.
John & Thady Gosden’s filly didn’t get away with that, however, and she’s been raised 11lb by the handicapper. More will be needed in this higher grade but there’s definitely scope for further progress.
Selection: Cape Flora @ SP
This is a rather unique race and it’s not too often that there’s £100,000 on offer for a maiden. Aidan O’Brien’s FRESCOBALDI clearly improved for the step up to 7f when denied by a head at Fairyhouse in June. He still showed signs of greenness, hanging all the way up the run-in and probably got himself beaten. It seems likely that he’ll improve from that experience and a more professional display could lead to victory.
Selection: Frescobaldi @ SP
FIFTH COLUMN won a decent handicap over a mile at Newmarket on his penultimate start and was probably a little unlucky in the Golden Mile at Goodwood last time out. He was keeping on and making progress before running out of room. John & Thady Gosden’s gelding is clearly going the right way and another big run could be on the cards.
Selection: Fifth Column @ SP
