Premier League Betting Preview - GW 24

Another week of Premier League action has been and gone, with Liverpool yet again showing they are relentless in their pursuit of the club’s 19th English league title. Old foes Manchester United were the victims this time around, with Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah grabbing the goals. In this gameweek, the Reds have two fixtures with an FA Cup tie sandwiched in between too. Elsewhere, Chelsea host Arsenal in the race for Europe, while Sheffield United host Manchester City.

Sheffield United vs Manchester City - 7:30pm 21st January
We’re running out of superlatives for Sheffield United at the moment, they have been fantastic all season and seem to be extremely comfortable at this level. After winning a domestic treble last season, things just don’t seem to be going right for Man City this term. A draw at home to Crystal Palace is a poor result for them and they’ll feel as if they need to get back on track here. Gabriel Jesus has a good chance of starting this game after his good form this season, plus he was one of the players rested on Saturday. Whether it will be Sergio Aguero or Raheem Sterling that he replaces, only Pep Guardiola knows.
Bournemouth vs Brighton & Hove Albion - 7:30pm 21st January
Eddie Howe looked like a broken man in his post match interview after the Norwich defeat, and another loss here could mean that the pressure just becomes too much. The Cherries have lost the last four Premier League games in a row, scoring 0 and conceding 10. Brighton’s last victory was actually against Bournemouth in the reverse fixture back on 28th December. The Seagulls unsurprisingly go into this game as favourites.
Aston Villa vs Watford - 7:30pm 21st January
Aston Villa have been heavily reliant on their captain Jack Grealish this season, with the 24 year old having scored 7 goals with 5 assists. This is a huge game for both sides as although Watford have been much the better side recently, they are still only one point and one place above Villa in the table. Troy Deeney has a great record against Villa though which has to be taken into account, with the Birmingham City fan scoring five goals in his last three games against them.
Everton vs Newcastle United - 7:30pm 21st January
There has been a clear improvement in Everton since Marco Silva was let go, and they now must be thinking a secure top 10 finish is there for the taking. Newcastle actually looked very solid defensively in their smash and grab victory against Chelsea and they’ll undoubtedly be set up to try and contain Everton in this game too, as they are the side with the lowest average possession in the league. With no Richarlison for the Toffees, they may well be successful with that gameplan.
Crystal Palace vs Southampton - 7:30pm 21st January
Crystal Palace will be delighted with their point at the Etihad, and new loan striker Cenk Tosun grabbing a goal, which may help their scoring issues. Southampton inexplicably threw away their 2-0 lead to lose against Wolves on Saturday and main man Danny Ings didn’t score. The Saints have a fairly good recent record against Palace, losing only one of the last five contests. It is fair to say that they have had their scoring boots on recently too, scoring twice in their last two league games.
Chelsea vs Arsenal - 8:15pm 21st January
Frank Lampard may be starting to feel the pressure of managing such a big club at this stage, as they have failed to beat a number of sides in the bottom half of the table this season. The Blues have been linked to Edinson Cavani but it remains to be seen if anything happens in the transfer market. Strangely, Arsenal have only won once under Mikel Arteta and are turning into draw specialists. These old rivals have a very similar record in terms of recent victories in this fixture, with Chelsea winning 25, Arsenal winning 26 and 19 draws in the last 70 games.
Leicester City vs West Ham United - 7:30pm 22nd January
It is fair to say that Leicester’s title challenge is well and truly over, with two defeats in a row. Losing to Burnley, in particular, is a poor result and they will need to fix things soon in order to arrest a potential slide. West Ham got a stubborn draw against Everton and it seems like David Moyes has made them harder to beat. The Hammers, perhaps surprisingly, have a decent record against Leicester only losing once in the last five. Both teams have scored in four of those matches too, with both defences looking quite poor.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Norwich City - 7:30pm 22nd January
Jose Mourinho has not really had the effect at Spurs that he would have wished so far, with the club still 8 points behind Chelsea in 4th. The lack of a striker is really harming them at the moment, so one of their players needs to step up and take goalscoring responsibilities. Teemu Pukki returned for Norwich at the weekend but it was Emi Buendia that caught the eye with a dazzling display. However, the Canaries have been so poor on the road this season and this game could well be similar to their dismal 4-0 loss at Old Trafford in their last away game.
Manchester United vs Burnley - 8:15pm 22nd January
Man United struggled at Liverpool, as every side have done so far this season. They need to get back to winning the easier games and this is a great fixture for them to have. Burnley ended a run of awful results with a shock win against Leicester at the weekend but they go in as massive underdogs again here. Having not started at Anfield and with no Rashford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to start young striker Mason Greenwood, who has a goal every 108 minutes in the Premier League, with three of his four league goals coming at Old Trafford.
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Liverpool - 8:00pm 23rd January
Wolves showed a lot of heart, desire and quality to come from behind and beat Southampton at the weekend, with Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez starring. It is getting to the point in the season that Liverpool can now genuinely look at going the entire season unbeaten. That being said, this is probably one of the toughest fixtures in their run-in, with other big sides really struggling at Molineux. This Reds side just look unbeatable in the Premier League this season though.
West Ham United vs Liverpool - 7:45pm 29th January
There’s an extra bonus game in this week’s fixtures, as Liverpool and West Ham clash in their rearranged contest. This game was supposed to be played at the London Stadium in late December but had to be postponed due to the Reds’ successful Club World Cup exploits. There is a good chance that goals could fly in here, particularly at one end.
