Fire or water, the horrors of war or a scourge of zombies, we’re seemingly always a few moments away from the apocalypse. In fact, atomic scientists’ Doomsday Clock recently ticked ten seconds closer to midnight.

It’s probably nothing to worry about.

As Slotmill’s Ragnarök slot game proves, we’ve been pondering the end of the world for as long as we’ve had thoughts of our own. The Norse version - Ragnarök - brings about the demise of Odin, Loki, Thor, and plenty of other characters, before rebuilding things anew.

Ragnarök - the online slot - takes a muted approach to calamity, although, there’s plenty here for players to ravage. Giant symbols, a progressive win multiplier, and a Loki's Trick function offer a path to a 10,000x win.

The apocalypse doesn’t have to be a dour affair. Entertain yourself before the skeletons arrive with Ragnarök bonus mechanics.

A simple one to start with, Ragnarök’s Free Spins round is triggered with 3, 4, or 5 BONUS symbols. These have a Gjallarhorn depicted on them, the instrument that warns of Ragnarök’s arrival in the Nordic tales. You can get up to 12 Free Spins by collecting BONUS symbols.

Each time you find a winning combination in the main game, the Progressive Win Multiplier increases. You'll find this visually represented as a glowing stone in the bottom left. The multiplier resets after each avalanche, when all winning symbols are removed, except in the Free Spins game.

Related to the previous, Loki's Trick lets the player leap up Progressive Win Multiplier levels, increasing values by a random amount.

With each avalanche, there's a chance that a 2x2 or 3x3 giant symbol will appear on the game grid. These humongous pieces contain up to 9 symbols, making winning combinations easier to find.

Ragnarök has nine symbols, including the BONUS and 'W' wild. The wild appears somewhere on the board after each win. It can serve as any symbol but the BONUS.
The lowest-paying symbols are the coloured animals. These are the world serpent Jormungandr, which pays a maximum of 5.00 for 12 pictures, Fenrir (5.50 for 12), and Odin's ravens Huginn and Muninn (6.00 for 12). All three of these begin at 0.15 for five symbols.
Thor, the Valkyrie, Odin, and Surtr return the most coins. The latter giant tops out at 12.50 for 12, while the others pay 7.00, 8.00, and 9.00, respectively.
As this is a cluster-pays game, you don’t need to worry about paylines. Find bunches of adjacent symbols running horizontally and vertically to claim a win. A cluster forms from a minimum of five identical pictures.

As hinted at earlier, Ragnarök’s aesthetics aren’t all fire and brimstone. A misty mountain range in the background hints at an apocalypse now long gone, with only a runestone’s glow to hint at earlier magic. Otherwise, the world is frozen.
The soundtrack is a fantasy fare, albeit with an air of sadness hanging between the drum beats.
