As far as Real Madrid’s rivals go, it’s pretty clear that Barcelona are the standouts, but with Atletico steadily improving over the past decade or so, these clashes have become more feisty. Real come into this game looking to move six points clear at the top of La Liga, and while there’s a long way left to go there’s surely no bigger motivation than going for your first domestic title since 2017, and only your third of the decade. Zinedine Zidane’s team have had their issues this season, but they’ve begun 2020 with seven straight wins in all competitions (although it took penalties to edge out Ateltico in the Spanish Cup Final), and confidence is incredibly high. Eleven different scorers in that time is a strange one, but it shows that Los Blancos are not as reliant on Karim Benzema as they have been at times, and as such they could cause Atletico several problems on an attacking front.
It’s fair enough to say that Atletico Madrid haven’t performed as well as their cross-city neighbours, and they’ll need to put a disappointing loss at Eibar and a meagre draw at home to Leganes behind them if they’re to avoid slipping out of the top three in the Spanish flight for the first time since 2012. All signs point towards another successful season, but sitting below both Sevilla and Getafe will not have been on the agenda, and they really can’t afford to lose more ground on Real Madrid and Barcelona. Diego Simeone’s side have generally been built on an outstanding defence, and they’ve conceded just 14 goals this campaign, with only Real conceding fewer. However, the major issues come at the other end of the pitch, with Atletico scoring just 22 - the same number as 17th-placed Mallorca. Alvaro Morata looks the most likely to score from their squad, and may have a point to prove against his former team.
