Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke - 2:30pm 16th May
The first match to return in the major European leagues could barely be a bigger one for the fans of the sides involved, as the Revierderby is considered to be one of the most ferocious rivalries in Germany. Of course, fans are not allowed in attendance but the occasion will still be a big one. English fans will likely have most eyes on Three Lions star Jadon Sancho for BVB, but before the break it was Erling Haaland that really captured the imagination. Ex-Huddersfield boss David Wagner now leads Schalke, but they have struggled recently, particularly in front of goal only scoring once in the last 387 minutes of play. It’s fair to say that Borussia Dortmund go into this game as favourites.
RB Leipzig vs Freiburg - 2:30pm 16th May
Leipzig will still believe that they are well in the Bundesliga title race, as they sit in 3rd place only five points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Julian Nagelsmann has done a fantastic job, though before the break they had recently dropped out of the top two. Their opponents Freiburg have actually won three of their last four games against Leipzig in the Bundesliga, so they may be considered as somewhat of a bogey team. That said, Leipzig often get the better of Freiburg at home.
Hoffenheim vs Hertha Berlin - 2:30pm 16th May
When you ask fans which game they’re looking forward to the most, the chances are that the answer will not be this game. That being said, we have all gone so long without football that this mid-table clash still holds a lot of interest. Hoffenheim are in 9th after a poor run of form before the break, losing three and drawing two of their last five. Hertha will be without the ex-Chelsea man Salomon Kalou, who has not been included due to breaking team rules.
Augsburg vs Wolfsburg - 2:30pm 16th May
Speaking of sides on poor runs of form before the break, Augsburg had lost four of their last five and were really struggling to find any form. They’re sitting in 14th, five points above the relegation play-off place. It’s a decent cushion, but if they keep losing games then they could easily be dragged in. Wolfsburg on the other hand are challenging for the European places and will feel like they have a good shot at Europa League football. Wolfsburg will be without key player Wout Weghorst for this game, as he misses out through suspension. They should still have too much for Augsburg though.
Fortuna Dusseldorf vs Paderborn - 2:30pm 16th May
Ah, a proper relegation battle. We’ve missed this. Visitors Paderborn are the smallest club in the Bundesliga with the smallest budget, so it will probably come as no surprise to see that they are currently rock bottom of the league. With 16 points, they are six points behind their hosts Fortuna Dusseldorf who hold the unwanted relegation play-off place. Whoever wins this game will give themselves a much stronger chance of pulling themselves out of danger, but the loser will be right in the mire. Unfortunately for Paderborn, they’re expected to suffer again.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Borussia Monchengladbach - 5:30pm 16th May
Frankfurt are having an extremely average season and have not been pulling up any trees so far. Of course, they sold some of their key players in the summer (which seems like a very long time ago now) including Sebastien Haller and have struggled for most of the campaign. Monchengladbach are flying high though and will actually feel as if they have an outside shot at the title, six points behind the leaders. Champions League qualification will be their aim though, and they’re well positioned to achieve it.
FC Koln vs Mainz - 2:30pm 17th May
Of all the sides in the Bundesliga, Koln will be one of the most dismayed by the timing of the enforced break as they were on a spectacular run of form at the time. They had won eight of their last 11 games, and the matches they lost were against three of the top four. The visitors have a real need to pick up points, as they’re only four clear of the relegation play-off. Mainz have a very poor record when they travel to Koln though, not winning there in eight visits, losing four.
Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich - 5:00pm 17th May
It goes without saying that Bayern Munich are the massive favourites to go on and claim yet another Bundesliga title, as the Bavarian giants once again hold top spot. It may not be as straightforward as previous seasons though, as they have a number of sides creeping up on them should they slip up. That said, a slip up is not what is expected in this particular fixture, as Union Berlin’s usually vociferous support will not be present. Union do tend to leak goals as well, so it may not be a pretty game for them.
Werder Bremen v Bayer Leverkusen - 7:30pm 18th May
To find a club the size of Werder Bremen marooned in the relegation places is a shock for many, and mostly comes down to some poor decisions in the running of the club. They are much bigger than some of the sides above them, but deserve to be where they are. Bayer Leverkusen on the other hand are challenging for Europe and will fancy three points. Playmaker Kai Havertz is undoubtedly the star man for Leverkusen and the likelihood is that he’ll run the show for them again in this fixture on Monday night.
